Welcome to The Charity Light Show
For almost a decade, our family and friends have come together to transform a home in West Watford into a spectacular Charity Light Show, spreading joy throughout the community while supporting vital causes.
Your donations go directly to the selected charity.
Mark buys all the display components himself, continually growing the show year after year for everyone's enjoyment.
Summary
Our Charity Light Show runs every evening from 4 pm to 9 pm, thoughtfully keeping the volume low to respect our neighbours. But if we see you outside, we’d love to come out, chat, and turn up the music to make your experience unforgettable.
We deeply appreciate your interest and support. We invite you to visit us in person to witness the magic firsthand.
If you can’t make it, don’t worry—all our dazzling light sequences will be shared on this website, later in December, for you to enjoy from anywhere in the world.
Stay connected and never miss an update by following us on Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. Join our community and be part of the joy that generosity lights up the season!
Our History
What began in 2016 as Mark’s idea to use his Christmas lights for a good cause has grown into a tradition of giving. That year, the show became a Charity Light Show, dedicated to supporting those in need.
2016–2021: The chosen charity was the Essex & Herts Air Ambulance. Having worked alongside this emergency service on the highways, Mark witnessed firsthand the lifesaving support they provide.
2022–2023: As the cost-of-living crisis deepened, many families faced the harsh choice between heating and eating. In response, we launched LightsForBites, raising over £800 in 2022 and more than £1,000 in 2023 for our local foodbank through JustGiving and Facebook donations.
2024: We suffered the loss of our dear friend Martyn to cancer. In his memory, this year’s Charity Light Show supports Macmillan Cancer Support, who stood by Martyn and his family when it mattered most.
Today, we proudly carry forward the name Charity Light Show for all future displays, regardless of the cause we champion.
Technical
Mark, known as Sparky, has pursued a lifelong passion for electronics, beginning his journey as an electro‑mechanical inventor at the age of 14. Trained as an Electronics and Communications Engineer, he designs and programs every aspect of the display himself.
Pamela, Mark’s wife, together with friends, contributes by decorating the physical props in the summer months. These decorations ensure the installations retain character and visual appeal even in daylight, complementing the technical brilliance of the illuminated sequences.
The show has evolved in step with technological advances:
Lighting progression: from traditional bulbs → LEDs → modern electronic smart pixels.
Energy system: powered by batteries recharged daily via solar panels, ensuring efficient operation of approximately 69,000 individually programmed smart LEDs.
Synchronisation: each LED is mapped and sequenced to dance in time with selected music tracks.
Mark dedicates four weeks of annual leave to designing and constructing new props, installing them at the end of November. Throughout the year, he develops new sequences during evenings and weekends, ensuring continuous innovation. Planning for the following year begins as soon as the current show is live.
This commitment results in a lightshow that grows in scale and sophistication each year, offering an ever‑enhanced experience for the community. Visitors are encouraged to support the associated charity through donations.
Every year, Mark, Pamela and friends bring the neighbourhood to life with thousands of dazzling smart LEDs, synchronised to music and powered sustainably by solar energy. It’s a show built with passion, creativity, and a whole lot of holiday spirit.
